"Give the Material a chance to speak"
Sheila Hicks
Sheila Hicks is an American artist. She is known for her innovative and experimental weavings and sculptural textile art that incorporate distinctive colors, natural materials, and personal narratives. Since 1964, she has lived and worked in Paris, France.
Warm-up:
We will begin by identifying the different shapes that Hicks works with to inspire our exploration. Let's warm up by drawing and using shape, color, movement, and texture in our pieces. This may be a nice way to slow down and begin playing with these concepts.
Choose any drawing (mark-making) materials that you wish.
Project:
Your drawing play and discovery may continue into the project time. You may also be ready to begin exploring a more dimensional piece.
Materials to consider:
- Sticks
- Rocks
- Yarns/strings
- Papers/cardboard
- Fabrics
I love Shelia Hicks's comment in the first video as she talks about her work and how she begins to create.
" ...tomorrow I would just like to have fun and see what happens..."
Let's PLAY and have some FUN!
