Seund Ja Rhee (also transcribed as Seongja Lee; June 3, 1918 – March 8, 2009) was a South Korean painter, engraver, draughtswoman, and illustrator. She also designed tapestries and mosaics. She was a prolific artist with more than 1,000 paintings, 700 prints, 250 ceramics, and numerous drawings. She exhibited mainly in France and in South Korea, with 84 solo exhibitions and almost 300 group exhibitions during her lifetime.
Warm-up + Project
I have included a variety of examples of Rhee’s work this week for inspiration.
Although I was initially drawn in by her exquisite tapestry-like oil paintings, I have also selected examples of Lithographs on paper and acrylic on canvas.
Here are 3 possibilities for simulating Rhee’s different periods of artwork. Choose one direction for your completed piece:
Lithograph Prints
Try using stamping on a painted background or adding cut paper
Acrylic Paintings
Any type of paint can be used, acrylic paint pens, watercolor colors, etc.
Tapestry Oil Paintings
Try using oil pastels, paint, crayon, colored pencils

Whatever direction and materials you choose, remember to include some layering
This should be fun!
