Raoul Dufy (1877 - 1953)

Raoul Dufy was a French Fauvist painter. He developed a colorful, decorative style that became fashionable for designs of ceramics and textile as well as decorative schemes for public buildings. He is noted for scenes of open-air social events. Wikipedia

In the early 1920s Dufy rededicated himself to painting and began to produce what are now his best-known works. His distinctive style is characterized by bright colours thinly spread over a white ground, with objects sketchily delineated by sensuously undulating lines.

Profile | Raoul Dufy: An Artist of Style

I love the paintings of French artist Raoul Dufy, especially his later work. They are bright, colorful, and fun, with images of gathering together outdoors and vacationing! At times Dufy's work appears as simple gesture drawings, enhanced by color but limited in detail.

Warm-up

We will warm up and play by drawing some simple line drawings; a still life, a landscape, or a gathering in an outdoor setting. To complete your warm-up add color with paints, markers, or colored pencils.

Project

After we have become comfortable with the inspiring style of Dufy, plan a finished piece using any subject and materials you choose.
