Milton Clark Avery was an American modern painter. Born in Altmar, New York, he moved to Connecticut in 1898 and later to New York City. He was the husband of artist Sally Michel Avery and the father of artist March Avery. Wikipedia

This week we are focusing on Milton Avery, specifically his later works of landscapes and seascapes.

Warm-up

Let's warm up by playing with different materials, trying to imitate patterns seen in natural landscapes. Note Avery's simple yet beautiful depictions of natural scenes, using muted color palettes and a variety of markings to indicate different areas of the landscape.

You might try painting with different brushes or tools, (sponges, a side edge of cardboard, stamping), and making different marks with the medium you have chosen.

Oil pastels or soft pastels may be fun to experiment with for making different marks.

This is a playful expressive exercise not meant to create an actual landscape.

Project

After warming up we will settle on the medium and create a finished landscape.

Before class, print or have handy a landscape or seascape to reference. You may find something on the internet, in a magazine, or perhaps a vacation photo.

For me, Avery's paintings are dreamy, calm, and quite serene. How do they make you feel?
