About
Marie Watt (born 1967) is a contemporary artist living and working in Portland, Oregon. Enrolled in the Seneca Nation of Indians, Watt has created work primarily with textile arts and community collaboration centered on diverse Native American themes.
This will be a 2-week project.
Warm-up/Project
Marie Watt is known for her blanket project artwork. She draws inspiration from her ancestors and her personal history, stories, and beliefs as part of the Seneca nation.
Week 1 | Drawing / Painting / Collage
We will take a look at Watt’s blanket artwork. Her use of patchwork, words, and colorful designs will inspire you to create your own blanket or patchwork project. You may design your project as a personal memory, story, or simply a representation of life and joyful living. You may use paper and any drawing/painting materials.
Week 2 | Mixed media + Texture
You may continue developing your original piece by adding depth and dimension. Use any mixed media materials that inspire you to create texture and layering on your project. If you would like, you may start fresh with a newly inspired piece.
