About the artist:
John Himmelfarb is a Chicago-based artist working for decades in drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. His work is described as, “unified by a ‘circulated library’ of motifs and organizing structures, such as geographic and urban mapping, abstracted natural and industrial forms and language systems.”
This week we will concentrate on the paintings, drawing, and sculptures from his icons series.
Warm-up:
Begin to think through simple icons (i.e. a symbol that represents an object, a function, or a sign, easily recognized from its simple shape and outline) and draw them using a black marker.
Some examples of simple icons could be:
heart
sun
key
star
moon
coffee cup
donut
flower
We will use the icon idea, cut-out symbol to create a finished warm-up piece.
Please have available the following additional materials:
- Black paper or another color (if available)
- Glue stick and scissors
- Watercolor, colored pencils, markers, or some other medium to add color
