Joe Light’s House

Joe Louis Light (1934–2005) was an American painter from Dyersburg, Tennessee. His work focuses on transcendentalism, attaining spiritual or moral enlightenment, and the balance and order of the universe.

Warm-up:

Let’s practice creating simple subject paintings, flattened and devoid of too much detail. Pay particular attention to outlining objects and people, as Light did in his paintings. There is a visual beauty Light made in his decision to outline his paintings in black or white.

Simple is the key to his “naive” representation of people and things.

Project:

Choose a subject and direction, perhaps a message to convey, to complete a finished piece.
