Fernand Léger was a French artist who worked in many mediums, including film and graphics. What he is best known for, though, are his large scale paintings and murals. Often painted in block colours with bold graphic lines, they are evidence of his belief that 'color is… as indispensable to life as water or fire'.

Fernand Léger remains a complex enigma. Best known for the modernity of his works and ideas, he celebrated machinery, urban life and progress. However, while his contemporaries were using more innovative techniques like papier mâché, collage, found object or photography, Léger clung to oil painting.

Warm-up:

Leger went through many different styles in his career as a painter.

Please take your inspiration from one of these periods/paintings. I personally am attracted to his portraits and style coined "tubism", and his black line paintings on the colorful background of rectangular shapes.

Please use the warm-up period to experiment with a style or two.

Project:

You will continue with your chosen style to complete a finished painting.
