“My first love was for color. How colors influence your emotions. How colors change depending on their surroundings. I am fascinated by how one color affects another and how the viewer is affected by their visual reception in his/her mind.
My second love is freedom. Art, especially abstract art and mixed media, enables me to have total freedom to express myself visually, without any limitations or restrictions. I feel free to use any material or technique available in the world. There is no ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, only my own inner sense of when a piece is complete.”
— Deborah Read
We are continuing this week with the exploration of spontaneous, free flowing expression with the artist Deborah Read.
Building on last weeks exploration of the Brazilian artist Tadaskia, I am framing this week as a more intense line, color, and shape exploration.

Warm-up + Project
We will begin by using a large paper grocery bag. Please cut one flat side and include the handle for a surface to work with.
If you are not in attendance this week the warm-up will be your homework!
I hope you will be able to carve out some time between this week and next to complete the shopping bag warm-up and we will share the completed pieces during class time on Wednesday, July 24.
For those attending class, you may continue with your shopping bag as a completed piece or begin another exploration during the 2nd half of class.
I find Read's work: big strokes, layers of paint, use of different surfaces, and dimensional pieces compelling to view.
Looking forward to seeing everyone's point of view inspired by Deborah Read.
