Ben Tinsley (b. 1981 Chicago, IL) is known for his use of color, shape, and dimensional use of oil paint. Often carving out a composition through thick layers of scrapped paint. The result is sculptural and dynamic. The collage like juxtaposition of form, color, shape, and texture work together to create visual harmony throughout his works.

Warm-up + Project

Tinsley creates his paintings by applying layers of thick paint and then scraping off areas of shapes, and lines, and creating form and movement to reveal an interesting tension in his composition.

For our warm-up and project, I would like to suggest

Paint + Paper + Collage (in any order)

Let's create paintings of layers of paint + papers (old work, magazines, images) cut or torn, working in a collage method to create texture, interest and surprise.

Please feel free to venture out in your creative exploration in any direction you choose, inspired by Ben Tinsley's work.
