Artist Bio

Ann Marie Coolick is an impasto painter from Arlington, VA focusing on colorful abstractions and expressionist landscapes using only palette knives and heavy body paint straight from the tube. She slathers frosting-like paint layer upon layer onto the canvas with paint running off the edges, resulting in a sculptural, three-dimensional appearance. Her "Polka Daubs" series explores the deconstruction of color and texture into their simplest form.

Ann Marie was a Resident Artist at the Arlington Arts Center from 2004 to 2009 and has since exhibited across the mid-Atlantic including solos at the Glen Allen Arts Center, the Center for the Arts in Manassas, and the Hylton Center. Her work has also been featured in Creative Digest UK, L'Officiel Australia, Elan Magazine, Arlington Magazine, and Home Goods. She graduated from Virginia Tech  Summa Cum Laude with a BA in Studio Art (honors painting concentration) and a BS in Marketing Management in 2003. Ann Marie was previously the founder/curator of the East Coast Art Collective, a group of 20 contemporary artists from throughout the US east coast. She currently resides with her family and three young boys in Arlington, VA.

Context:

Ann Marie Coolick paints in acrylic and oil with a thick impasto application, as she creates her abstract, floral, and landscape paintings.

Warm-up:

As we are inspired by Coolick's style, I would like you to use torn paper to create a dimensional look in your piece. Grab bright color papers, muted tones, or a very limited palette. We will tear and glue for a layered 3D application.

Project:

The project may be a continuation of your warm-up or a new beginning with another medium. You may use pastels (oil or soft) acrylic paint, markers, or colored pencils to create a texture and dimension by layering your medium
